Virtual Debates: 2020 Presidential Candidate

Bill de Blasio

It matters. It matters for this fight for the heart and soul of our party that we nominate a candidate that has seen the face of poverty and didn't just talk about it, but gave people $15 minimum wage. It matters that we nominate a candidate that saw the destruction wrought by a broken healthcare system, and gave people universal healthcare. It matters that we nominate someone who saw the wasted potential of our children denied pre-k and gave it to every single one of them for free. These things really matter, and these are the things I've done in New York and I want to do the same for this whole country, because putting working people first, it matters. We need to be that party again. It matters. With your help we can put working people first again in America.

Health Care

New York state has codified a woman's right to reproductive health, and in New York City we are going even further to provide funds to eliminate economic barriers to women seeking reproductive services. If you think that choice is a matter of how much money you have in your pocket, then you are not really pro-choice, and so you cannot be in favor of the Hyde amendment and still be pro-choice. We need to do the same thing on a federal level. We need to codify Roe-vs-Wade into federal law and also move to universal health so that you know that there is not an economic barrier to choice.Source: We Decide Forum (June 2019)

Education

One of de Blasio’s biggest accomplishments as mayor was the implementation of a universal pre-K program. About 70,000 New York City kids are now enrolled in the city’s pre-K system, up from roughly 20,000 before de Blasio took office. He also worked to reduce school suspensions, with mixed results. De Blasio has also drawn criticism for a failed education reform plan that cost more than $700 million.
