Virtual Debates: 2020 Presidential Candidate

Joe Biden

I'm running to lead this country because I think it's important to restore the soul of this nation. This president has ripped it out. He is the only president who has equated racist and white supremacist with ordinary and decent people. He is the only president who has actively engaged and embraced dictators and thumbed their nose at out allies. And secondly, I'm running for president because I think we have to restore the backbone of America, the poor and hard-working middle-class people. You can't do that without restoring the dignity they once had. And the last thing, we've got to unite the United States of America as much as anybody says we can't. If we do, there is not a single thing the American people can't do. This is the United States of America. We can do anything if we are together. Together. God Bless you All. And God protect our troops.

Economic Stimulus

We have to rebuild the backbone of this nation. Wall Street did not build America. You built America. Average people given a chance built America. Right now, the poor are getting poorer, the bottom is falling out of the middle class, and income inequity is at an all-time high. it's time we start to reward work over wealth. On day one I will move to eliminate Trump's tax cuts for the super wealthy, eliminate $400-500 billion in loopholes, and put that money to good use.

Crime

There are too many people in prison. Too many black men and I might add, too many black women in prison. Our reforms started to reduce that population. Under our reforms 38,000 people came out. No more mandatory minimums. End private prisons. Bail reform. No juveniles in adult prison. Instead of teaching people how to be better criminals in prison, we should be educating people in prison. Automatic restoration of rights once your sentence is served, meaning not only that you can vote, but also that you automatically qualify for every program, including Pell grants so you can go on to get your education.

I call it ARPA-H to fund research and take all the technology we have and focus on solving problems that are within our reach like the Biden Cancer Initiative and the moonshot.

Education

12 years are no longer enough to prepare for the jobs of the 21st century. I want to triple Title I funding for schools that are in distress. We need to fund universal pre-k, we need to raise teacher's salaries, we have to fully fund special education, and we have to double the number of school psychologists and guidance counselors, and nurses. We can afford free community colleges - cutting in half the cost of a 4-year degree, and we have to reduce the student debt.

No one should be going into prison because they are addicted, they should be going into rehabilitation. Mandatory treatment in jail for people who also suffer from addiction. Decriminalize marijuana and also expunge records for those who have been convicted.

We have to restore what Barack and I did in terms of fuel economy as well as dealing with coal fired plants. We can double off-shore wind energy by 2030. $400 billion into clean energy research and innovation. We also have to hold polluters immediately accountable.

Foreign Policy

First and foremost, we must enforce existing trade laws and invest in the competitiveness of our workers and communities here at home, so that they complete on a level playing field. Then, we need to write the rules of the road for international trade through a modern, inclusive process—rules that protect our workers, safeguard the environment, uphold labor standards and middle-class wages, foster innovation, and take on big global challenges like corporate concentration, corruption, and climate change.
