Drug Policy

Quintuple Federal funding, from $4.5 to $20 billion per year directed toward addiction treatment and rehabilitation for addictive opiates at the local levels. Impose a new tax on opiate manufacturers to fund treatment and rehabilitation, retroactive to 2005. The drug companies will pay to treat the conditions they have profited from. Direct the FDA to regulate pharmaceutical company marketing tactics as much as they regulate the release of new drugs. Work to limit the importation of heroin and fentanyl, particularly from China. The Chinese government must do more to curb supply before it enters our country—we should negotiate for marked and demonstrated reductions in return for continued market access.

We [Colorado] became the first state to legalize Marijuana and transform our criminal justice system at the same time. We closed two prisons.

As your president, I will end the failed war on drugs that has ruined so many people's lives, that has overcrowded our prisons, and torn families apart. I'll reform our criminal justice system, end the marijuana prohibition, end cash bail, and ban private prisons.

When low-income people and people of color face huge disparities in arrests, sentencing, and incarceration compared to wealthy and white people for the same or lesser charges, it’s a clear and urgent sign that we need to rectify the injustices in our criminal justice system. We have a mass incarceration crisis, and institutional racism pervades the way we enforce laws. To rectify this, we should legalize marijuana at the federal level and expunge past records; reform our sentencing laws so that judges can have more flexibility when dealing with low-level, nonviolent drug offenses; change federal rules for our prisons; end cash bail; and invest resources in communities harmed by the racist war on drugs.

No one should be going into prison because they are addicted, they should be going into rehabilitation. Mandatory treatment in jail for people who also suffer from addiction. Decriminalize marijuana and also expunge records for those who have been convicted.
