Virtual Debates: 2020 Presidential Candidate

Tim Ryan

There is nothing worse than not being heard, nothing worse than not being seen, and I know that because I've represented for 17 years in congress the forgotten community. They've tried to divide us: who's white, who's black, who's gay, who's straight, who's a man, who's a woman. And they ran away with all the gold because they divided the working class. It is time for us to come together. I don't know how you feel but I'm ready to play some offense. I come from the middle of industrial America but these problems are all over our country. There's a tent city in LA. There's homeless people and people around our country who can't afford a home. It's time for us to get back on track. The teacher in Texas, the nurse in New Hampshire, the waitress in Wisconsin, all of us coming together playing an offense that lifts everybody up. I will only promise you one thing, when I walk into that oval office every morning, you will not be forgotten. Your voice will be heard.

Economic Stimulus

Working hard and playing by the rules should matter in America. It's about putting together and industrial policy so that we start building things again - in the United States of America. And we don't just talk about $15/hr. We talk about $30/hr and $40/hr and $50/hr jobs so that if you work hard and play by the rules you can have a good living in the United States of America.

Health Care

Healthcare is a right — not a privilege. I helped pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which allowed millions to be able to afford and receive coverage for the first time in their lives. We have a long way to go and that is just the fact. Monthly premiums are still too expensive, prescription drug prices continue to rise, and our life expectancy continues to drop year after year. I believe the first and most immediate step needs to be the creation of a public option that allows Americans to buy into Medicare without eliminating private health insurance options.

Environment

A national commitment to clean energy not only reduces our carbon footprint but also creates opportunities for new, good-paying jobs in communities across the country. There are 800 component parts that make up a new wind turbine, there will be almost 30 million electric vehicles estimated to be on the road by 2030, the solar industry is growing at 50 percent annually — someone is going to build these things, and I want them all built right here in the United States.

Foreign Policy

I think this has been the President Trump appeasement tour. I have no idea why he is shaking hands with a dictator, who just in May, was sending missiles into the Sea of Japan. I mean, you don't reward that kind of behavior with a visit to your country by the President of the United States. There's been no progress at all. They have done nothing they have been talking about. It is historic, but what has been done? Nothing. And the whole deal with China, backing down on Huawei, are you kidding me? What China has been doing with cyber-security, what Huawei has been doing all over the world and and we're going to back down? I thought that was the one piece that we could count on President Trump to hold the line on for national security purposes and he's loosening what he did. I think this is very, very dangerous. I'm very disappointed in the President.

Domestic Policy

It is time for us to fix our agriculture and food system. Farmers are struggling, obesity and diabetes rates are rising, and there are communities without access to fresh produce. We need a comprehensive strategy that strengthens our country’s small and regional farms, eliminates food deserts, and promotes healthy eating.
